Volunteer Board Positions Available

SAORI ARTS NYC (SANYC) is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to inspire creativity, joy and self-confidence through free style weaving for people of all ages with intellectual, developmental, or physical disabilities or chronic illness. We fulfill our mission by partnering with organizations that provide programs and services to this segment of our community.  

SAORI (SA, Zen meaning everything has its own dignity and ORI, Japanese for weaving) is recognized as a healing art form around the world, unique in its philosophy that in every weaving there are no mistakes, only its own expression of individual beauty. 

SAORI Arts NYC believes that:

Board Candidate Qualifications

SAORI ARTS NYC is seeking board members who will provide guidance and essential governance services to sustain the mission, vision and values of SANYC.  The Board would particularly benefit from the participation of members with experience in the arts; the healthcare field including the impact of chronic illness and disabilities in both children and adults; marketing/public relations; foundation/corporate philanthropy; finance; law. 

General Board Member Responsibilities - 

Each Board member will 

  • Commit to serve a three- year term on the SANYC Board with opportunity for term renewal. 

  • Work with the President to create strategic direction and set short- and long-term goals.

  • Commit to $2,000 board dues or a donation that is comfortable for you.  

  • Provide access to resources, i.e., individuals, corporations, foundations, and support solicitation activities with these resources.  

  • Be informed about the organization’s mission, services, challenges, and opportunities.  

  • Serve as advocate and ambassador. Be an active and creative force internally and externally in advancing SANYC’s mission and improving the effectiveness and strength of its programs.

  • Attend four board meetings annually in addition to the Annual Board Retreat. 

  • Participate in one of the board’s working committees

  • Education, Programs, Fundraising, Marketing, Partnerships

Volunteer Committee Member Positions Available


Summary

SAORI Arts NYC seeks Access and Inclusion Committee members to provide insight as to how SANYC can better develop its accessibility practices. SAORI Arts NYC created the committee to seek out and learn from the diverse identities, lived experiences, and interests of our community and audiences. The committee will focus on issues of disability, inclusion, and accessibility, and apply insights to improve programs and operations. Access and Inclusion Committee members review SANYC’s practices as a non-profit, give avenues for growth, and work to make those changes a reality.

Meetings occur once every two months over zoom for an hour. Access and Inclusion work is intended to be completed during meetings. Working outside of meeting hours may occur, but is never required. 

SAORI Arts NYC strongly encourages participants of SAORI workshops as well as staff from SANYC partnerships to apply. Responsibilities: 

  1. Attend hour-long committee meetings over zoom every other month

  2. Provide expertise on issues of accessibility that pertain to SAORI Arts NYC 

  3. Bolster the work of SAORI Arts NYC by analyzing SANYC’s teaching methods, expanding partnerships, growing accessible services, best communications practices and more

  4. Stay up-to-date on issues faced within the disabled and chronic illness communities

Skills and Qualities that are a “plus”:

  • Experience within the world of accessibility, either by working with people with disabilities and/or chronic illness or through one’s own experiences of chronic conditions

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact authentically

  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently

  • Knowledge of Saori philosophy and weaving

  • Strong sense of initiative and a creative approach to problem-solving

  • Displays a high level of support for colleagues, and builds professional and respectful relationships with others 

  • Bilingual, particularly in any of the following languages: ASL, Spanish, Japanese

Pay:  Being a committee member is a volunteer position. For each meeting attended, there is a $50 honorarium given.
